What Is RCD In Drilling?

Performance has a complete line of hydraulic chokes, rotating control devices (RCD) and related accessory items. Unlike the slow processes of circulating a column of modified density mud into the wellbore (as would be performed in conventional drilling systems) the backpressure imparted by MPD equipment is transmitted through the entire fluid column in seconds to counteract influxes or losses.
More importantly, the successful deployment of the BTR RCD also positions MPD for further expansion into the territory of ultra-deepwater casing rotator drilling (at water depths greater than 7,000 ft), especially when dynamically positioned drilling units are involved.

In future it may be appropriate to promote a system where increased industry access to MPD capabilities would be driven by mandates set by local and international governing bodies as part of their assessment of applications for deepwater drilling permits.
In a significant design advance, the Model 7875 DS enhances the safety of offshore MPD operations by using a remotely operated hydraulic latching system that allows bearing and sealing elements to be changed without the need for personnel in the moonpool area.

Rcd is the rotary circulating device which is used in underbalanced drilling( when bottom hole circulation pressure is lower than formation pressure being drilled) which allows drill string reciprocating and rotary motion in the closed BOP situation.
A below tension ring (BTR) RCD is the first device to be deployed as a subsea riser component. It provides early kick and loss detection and enhances the riser gas-handling system by allowing early detection of riser gas breakout and facilitating pressure control for the same.
The EC-DrillĀ® system can easily perform Managed Pressure Cementing (MPC) in an operationally convenient manner. The application aboard a submersible rig was aimed at drilling Malaysian carbonate formations where high fluid loss was a problem. No losses were encountered while drilling the upper carbonate structure using constant bottomhole pressure (CBHP) MPD.

Detection during pressure set-point changes in MPD operations. This equipment is used for drilling a borehole through soft and hard rock layers for the construction of foundation. Prior MPD operations aboard floating vessels have been configured with a surface RCD above the water line and the tension ring.
It is a very cost effective method in drilling a deep and large diameter bore holes to fit the requirement of the industry. A key enabler for any MPD system, whether on land or offshore, is the RCD, used in a mud-return system to contain annular fluids while drilling.
